Elisabete Finger – Enchantment practices of matter

A search for the sensory

This workshop takes you on an adventure through another world, that of things and matter. You explore meandering landscapes in which you can get lost, but in which you can also find yourself as something material, as a body. Elisabete Finger’s “enchantment practices” challenge you to let go of the rational and embrace unknown sensory experiences.

Finger stimulates your sense of wonder through an array of exercises around breathing, movement and composition. Together you dive into her choreographic principles and strategies to activate and enchant the “body-as-matter”. A body that appears to itself as flesh, bones, liquid, skin, and hair, with material properties such as weight, volume, texture, smell and temperature. A body that finds its presence in a material world, where things have the magic ability to exceed their object status. Choreographic material is derived from this specific perspective.

The workshop is spread over three days: two days of practice and exploration, and a third day where participants have an “open studio moment”. Here they share fragments of the exercises and small choreographic experiments with other Out of the Toolbox-participants.

Elisabete Finger is a Brazilian choreographer based in Berlin. In her work she explores the rawness of bodies and materials through moving and mixing their anatomies. She plays with their textures, forms and fluids and creates choreographic situations that balance between wonder and disturbance. Her work is shown in dance, performance and visual arts contexts. Since 2018 she has been teaching her Enchantment Practices in art institutions throughout Brazil and Europe.
