Isaac Spencer – Greatest Hits

Reviewing your personal dance history, real or imagined, which dances would make it into your very own “greatest hits” collection? Using the music industry model of “greatest hits”, or a compilation of successful or memorable performances, this workshop will offer methodology to reveal your own personal dance anthology, beginning with your very first encounter with dance or movement and traveling through to the present day and beyond.

The workshop will guide participants through techniques to use muscle memory to revisit past dances and engage our imaginations to embellish, distort or reinvent our dancing histories. We will deconstruct both the terms “greatest” and “hits” to search for the primal and urgent sources of our dancing practices. Scores will be created to house our “greatest hits” resulting in solo material that can be performed for each other.

Isaac Spencer is a dancer, teacher and choreographer and currently professor for dance at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. He studied at the Juilliard School, received the Princess Grace Award in 2003 and, according to Dance Magazine, was one of the “25 to Watch” in 2006. He danced with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Cullberg Ballet and the Gothenburg Opera Dance Company. For over ten years he has been active in the independent dance scenes in Germany and Sweden, performing and creating work, rehearsal directing, mentoring, and initiating interdisciplinary research projects.
