On the contemporary move
How do you find a balance between instinct and intellect, spontaneity and discipline, freedom and control? Jiří Pokorný approaches these conflicting ideas in a physical way, as a form of free play. He examines how you can arrive at a choreography from raw material of momentary inspiration. Gradually, you notice that something that originates organically flows over into a system, in which there is room for both questions and answers. In this workshop, you will experience how structure arises in improvisation and vice versa.
Czech choreographer Jiří Pokorný graduated from the Prague National Dance Conservatory in 2000 and joined world-class ensembles such as the Nederlands Dans Theater and Kidd Pivot, where he worked with renowned choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Chrystal Pite and Ohad Naharin, among others. In 2013, Jiří transitioned on to making his own works as a freelance choreographer for companies and production houses across Europe and North America. As a teacher he collaborates with institutions such as Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Juilliard School in New York, Arts Umbrella Vancouver, NDT’s SummerIntensive and Architanz Tokyo. Jiří directs his own educational program for young choreographers called The Pioneer Project in The Netherlands
