Music and Dance
How do people listen? How do they explore a space not only in a physical way but also by listening? And how does that affect how they move in that space? The workshop ‘Play it by ear’ consists of a series of intuitive exercises about listening and movement. During the masterclass we explore the power, the possibilities and the limits of listening with your body. Because active listening is not something we do with our ears only, our whole body resonates with it.
Through exercises such as ‘a listening improvisation’ and ‘compositional listening’ we discover how our body reflects, filters and absorbs sound. Equipped with a microphone, it even becomes an instrument you can use to compose.
After studying philosophy and mixed media, Stijn Dickel worked with Jan Fabre as a musician-performer. He also composed various sound compositions for dance, theatre, circus and documentary. He is the artistic director and sound artist at aifoon, an art organization that, through participatory projects and productions, investigates the relationships between listening and movement / being moved.
